We had third row left seats and it was fabulous.<\/p>\n<p>Having been raised on mid-1980s <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> (good, but not great comedy; <em>SNL <\/em> peaked early) and stolen viewings of Eddie Murphy&#8217;s <em>Raw<\/em> and Robin Williams&#8217; <em>Live At The Met<\/em>, Carlin when I discovered him in my early 20s on HBO was a delight: clever, smart, and ascerbic as hell.  He played with language in a way that no other comedian in my experience had before, and, frankly, no other comedian has since.<\/p>\n<p>Carlin was once quoted as saying &#8220;&#8221;If you&#8217;ll scratch a cynic, you&#8217;ll find a disappointed idealist.&#8221;  Like many things, he was right about this I think.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to Carlin&#8217;s original &#8220;Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television&#8221; from his 1972 album <em>Class Clown<\/em> (this version was recorded off the original vinyl that was given to <acronym title=\"TheGirlFriend\">TGF<\/acronym> at 14 years-old by her future brother-in-law).<embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.odeo.com\/flash\/audio_player_standard_gray.swf\" width=\"275\" height=\"35\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" wmode=\"transparent\" flashvars=\"audio_duration=7:18&amp;external_url=https:\/\/homemaderavioli.com\/woodstock\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/sevenwordsyoucanneversayontelevision.mp3\" \/>or check out his 1978 revised list.<br \/>\n<object width=\"425\" height=\"349\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/3_Nrp7cj_tM&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6&#038;border=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/3_Nrp7cj_tM&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;rel=0&#038;color1=0x2b405b&#038;color2=0x6b8ab6&#038;border=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"340\" height=\"285\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you partake of the media or not, the world is linguistically a poorer place for Carlin&#8217;s death.
