Practically this means 1) we get an &#8220;extra&#8221; hour today (yay for manipulating time through philosophy of knowledge principles) and 2) it means it will be lighter in the morning and pitch black when I leave the office at 5pm on Monday evening. Based on when we switch back, however, Standard time isn&#8217;t really standard any more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2669\" style=\"width: 373px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2669\" src=\"https:\/\/homemaderavioli.com\/woodstock\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/standardtimecom_proposed-timezones-400x262.gif\" alt=\"Image from standardtime.com\" width=\"373\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.homemaderavioli.com\/woodstock\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/standardtimecom_proposed-timezones-400x262.gif 400w, https:\/\/www.homemaderavioli.com\/woodstock\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/standardtimecom_proposed-timezones-300x196.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While I think we need to stop this spring forward\/fall back nonsense, this proposal from standardtime.com for mainland timezones is just as nuts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Daylight Saving Time applied in the U.S. for 237 days in 2015. That means will only have been on so-called Standard time for 128 days out of the 365 in 2015. For 2016 we&#8217;ll be on DST for 239 out of 366 days (Thanks, Gregorian calendar!).<\/p>\n<p>So how can something be &#8220;standard&#8221; if it&#8217;s the smaller portion of the division?<\/p>\n<p>Random things I ponder as I reset the <acronym title=\"OK, 10 of those reset themselves (3 computers, 2 cell phones, 3 atomic clocks, 2 Fitbits) and one (the VCR\/DVD recorder combo) we just don't bother with but still...why does every freaking thing have a clock on it?\">23 clocks<\/acronym> I have <acronym title=\"Not including the clock in each of our cars; total clocks in my personal life: 25\">in my house.<\/acronym><\/p>\n<p>If you want to read more, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/read\/demetrios-matsakis-and-the-master-clock\">this great article on how the U.S. Navy master clock keeps time for the world<\/a> or CNN&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/10\/30\/living\/daylight-saving-time-feat\/\">annual piece on the myths behind Daylight Saving Time<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In places that follow it, the U.S. switched from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time this morning.
