Thought That Came Unbidden

Parity at last! Parity at last!

The most frustrating thing about Internet Explorer’s supposed dominance of the browser market isn’t the huge security holes that Microsoft’s shoddy coding allows in each release. It isn’t even the screwed up way IE renders the box model in CSS (though that’s pretty damn close). No, it’s the fact that all these nify plug-in bars, like the official ones from Yahoo! (their Firefox toolbar is in beta) and Google are only available for IE.

Finally, though, we have parity: Merriam-Webster Online has released a search bar plug-in for Firefox that will allow one-click searching of either their dictionary or their thesaurus.

How sweet it is, indeed.

Don’t have Firefox yet? Well why not? It’s free, and it’s the best browser on the planet. Go get it already!

Hawaii, part 1

As an adult I’ve never taken a two week vacation. Some of that has been finances, some of it has been the stingy nature of American employers’ vacation policies.

Whatever the case, the first part of the Hawaii vacation trip photos are available in the photoblog. There are a lot of photos, but Maui is worth it. The thing these photos don’t capture is how delicious Maui smells. With the exception of hot, still early evening in Lahaina, the entire island, it seems, smells like flowers, particularly the oleander that seems to be planted everywhere.

I’m hoping to get the second part, our week on Oahu, finished before the box we had to send home parcel post gets here. Even with the box’s five-week head start, it might be a near thing.

This makes things simpler how?

So, I admit it, I open my boss’ mail. It’s part of my job description. He received a catalog today called “Alternatives for Simple Living”

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the simple living movement’s first step to simpler living is to have you buy books about how to live simply?

And I promise this Andy Rooney-ish short entry trend will stop very, very soon.

Philosophical differences

Isn’t amazing how many people are willing to kill in the name of a principle but so few are really willing to die to defend it?

I’m so going to hell

When ever a new place catches my fancy, or I’m reminded pleasantly of an old place, more likely than not I’ll add it to the handy-dandy weather list on my customized “My Yahoo!” page just so I can feel connected.

Just for giggles today I tried to get driving directions from Washington, DC to Lahaina, HI. I think I broke Yahoo’s map function; it seemed really, really confused.

Oh, yes, and there were donuts today.

I am so going to hell.
